It’s that time of year again. Halloween is right around the corner, and the kids are busy deciding what they want to be and picking out their costumes. Adults are busy trying to decide what treats to hand out to all those kiddos. While trying to decide what treats to hand out, you may want to consider how to make Halloween Special for ALL children!
What do I mean by ALL children?
“Of course, you give candy to ALL the kids! “
Well, that’s just what I want to discuss… how to make Halloween Special for ALL children.
Considering ALL Children at Halloween
Do you REALLY take into consideration ALL children when handing out candy? I know, for years, I did NOT.
I had no idea (or didn’t even think about it) that some kids can’t have candy. Some kids can’t have sugar because of medical conditions, some have allergies or intolerance to certain types of food/treats, and there are children who don’t eat by mouth. Yes, because my child, Aiden, is one of those kiddos. He eats by feeding tube only.
I remember taking Aiden out Trick-or-Treating (early and depending on the weather) and he would get tons of candy but WHO ate all that candy? His Dad and I! We don’t need THAT happening! Hahaha!
What was Aiden getting out of it??? He did get to dress up for Halloween but that’s only half the fun!
Not until one year when Aiden was a little older did this hit me and I’m the Mom and didn’t even really think about how to make Halloween Special for ALL children!
Our Trick-or-Treating Experience that Made Us Aware
We went Trick-or-Treating with Aiden in our neighborhood and when we got to this one home just down the street from us, the woman came out and said, “I have a special treat for you, Aiden”. She then handed him a couple of Little Golden Books! BOOKS!!! No candy?? This was a big WOW moment for us!
This woman put more thought into providing something special for MY CHILD than I was! I was just focusing on the costume, but she focused on the experience for Aiden as well!
The entire experience made me much more aware of including ALL children in these experiences. That’s why I was THRILLED to hear about the Teal Pumpkins that I had seen over the years on people’s porches on Halloween! It does exactly THAT! It tells the public exactly how to make Halloween Special for ALL children!
What Does the Teal Pumpkin Represent?
The Teal Pumpkin Project® was introduced in 2014 by The Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) to provide an amazing experience of Halloween for ALL Children. FARE supports providing children with alternatives to candy and treats with in-expensive non-food items. The color ‘Teal’ is the color of the food and allergy awareness community and has been used to create awareness about the seriousness of medical conditions for over 20 years!
How to Participate in The Teal Pumpkin Project
It is easy for YOU to participate in The Teal Pumpkin Project. If you would like to participate in The Teal Pumpkin Project, you can simply put a purchased teal pumpkin on your porch or around your front door, so it is visible to the families who come trick-or-treating. The Traditional Halloween Trick-or-Treat Experience
Many people question if The Teal Pumpkin Project takes away from the Traditional Halloween Trick-or-Treat Experience. The answer is NO! Their goal is not to take away from the traditional Halloween experience but to INCLUDE ALL CHILDREN in the experience! You can still hand out candy as well, and that is encouraged, just keep them in separate bowls/containers! The goal is to ensure that kids with allergies or other health concerns are included in a non-threatening, healthy way.
