Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore
RV Camping is fun no matter what you are doing, but sometimes you need a little extra fun after a while! We have gathered the best and listed them as our Top 10. We want to share with you the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore on your next RV Camping Trip! We thought we would shake things up a bit and give you some ideas for entertainment inside and out of the RV so you can think about what you would like to do in addition to just camping and get prepared with anything you may need before the major camping season begins!
#1 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Fishing
Do you have a childhood memory of fishing with a Family Member or a friend that you still look back on with enjoyment? That does not surprise me because fishing tends to bring on feelings of achievement and empowerment. When going fishing with friends it helps you build camaraderie.
With any activity that involves factors outside of one’s control this past time will teach patience. Maybe that is why it’s called fishing and not catching.
A great thing about fishing is that is can be used as recreation therapy because spending time in nature has been shown to diminish depression, reduce inflammation as well as offset stress. That is a great reason to go fishing. If you need one more reason to go than my thought would be why not take an opportunity to spend time with your kids maybe your nieces and nephews and show them an enjoyable pastime and be a positive mentor.
If you decide fishing sounds like a hobby you would like to start, remember that most of the lures and baits are designed to catch the buyer’s attention as well as the fish. Sometimes you can just start off simple!!!
#2 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Bird Watching
I don’t think it’s a secret that Bird Watching is one our favorite hobbies while RV Camping or anytime! We got started with this hobby from a digital newspaper program that Aiden used in school. There was an article on The FeederWatch Program. We had never heard of Bird Watching let alone the FeederWatch Program, but Aiden (our son) and I researched it and found it to be a very fun activity!
All you need to do is hang some bird feeders filled with bird food appropriate for your area and count the birds that come to you feeder!
Bird Watching Programs and Events Throughout the Year
The FeederWatch Program runs from November to April every year.
In addition to the FeederWatch Program, we also participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count every year in February and this year it runs from the 12th through the 15th!
We also participated in the Global Bird Weekend for the first-time in October of last year and it was a lot of fun! Their Goal is to raise funds for the Birdlife Conservation Project to Stop the illegal Trade in Birds. We did an inclusion video for the Global Bird Weekend Event, and you can check out that on our YouTube Channel as well.
Another fun event that we participate in is October Big Day! October Big Day is a day dedicated to Bird Watching and Bird Counting in a single day event.
SOWLE RV’s Facebook Group for Bird Watching
If you would like to participate with us in any of these birds watching and counting programs, we invite you to join our special Facebook Group The SOWLE RV Team for Bird Watching! Bird watching is surprisingly fun and something you can do from just about anywhere!
If you would like to learn how to bird watch or more information about The FeederWatch Program, we have great articles that explain everything you need to know! The links to those articles as well as to our Facebook Group are in this podcast’s description.
#3 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Geocaching
Geocaching is a recreational activity that is done outdoors. Participants use a GPS or a mobile device to perform a worldwide hide and seek type game. It is very similar to a Treasure Hunt but is a high-tech game now. Additionally, it is becoming very popular among RV Campers for entertainment while traveling and enjoying the great outdoors!
It’s a great way for everyone to experience unique places they may never have traveled to before. Furthermore, there are some state parks who have joined in on the fun and have created their own Geocaching Activities within the State Campgrounds. Certainly, RV Camping Geocaching is a fun new trend that is catching on fast!
Participants create geocaches (a waterproof container) that contain a specific object, a pen or pencil, and a Logbook. Next, they decide on a location to hide it in and mark it by coordinates. This is done all over the world for others to try locating. The player who finds the geocache signs and dates the logbook, proving they have found it. It is then placed back where it was found. Many times, items such as toys, trinkets, or other items are traded within this system and then the game continues with the new object. Information on approximate location, item left, and logbook are stored online on different websites and apps.
Contents that are hidden at Geocaches are free for the taking, however, they must be replaced with a different item usually of higher value or personal meaning. Some items that are common are unusual coins, small toys, ornaments, buttons, CDs, books, disposable cameras.
#4 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Photography
The next Hobby we suggest is Photography! There is so much in nature to photograph while out camping that the possibilities are endless! The birds, plants, animals, landscape are all different from at home, the entire scenery is different, and that opens a whole new world of photography related options. If you travel to the country, seaside, lakeside, ocean front, or a forest area, there is sure to be something new that you wouldn’t see at home. Just think about how many things you can photo-journal about while RV Camping!
We have a great article on creating inspirational and motivational photography while RV Camping where we give instructions on how to take nature photography by choosing your subject, details about basic point and shoot nature photography with devices to help, how to create inspirational and motivational nature photography for any ability in much more detail, and how to edit and enhance your photos. Additionally, we go into details about using the photos you take to tell a story with your images with Photojournalism, creating a Copyright for each of your photos, and how and where to share your photos on social media.
Our son, Aiden, enjoys everything relating to Camping, Nature, and Photography. He especially loves to take his own nature photos. Aiden has special needs, and it is especially important to us to find ways to allow Aiden to do these things he enjoys. We realized that this may be something others with Special Needs would really enjoy doing while RV Camping but may not know how to get started. That’s why we decided to include a special section within the above-mentioned article of this fun hobby for anyone while RV Camping, how to use an iPad for photography, and the 5 items that you need to do this. So be sure to check that out if you or a family member is interested in Photography as a new hobby! We also have a fun and free 31-Day Photography Challenge and we would love for you to join us in that fun challenge as well!
#5 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Drones
1.5 million people or more currently own a Drone. They do need to be registered if they weigh over .55 pounds. For those of you around our area in Kansas, drones are only legal to fly in Kansas state parks at designated UAV locations. Playing around with a drone while RV Camping can be a fun way to entertain the entire family with awesome aerial views of your area that you would otherwise miss.
#6 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Water Activities
There are many water activities that you can try while RV Camping. We have done most of these and owned many water toys! They are boating, jet skiing, tubing, and skiing. Lots of fun. A blast for sure!
#7 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Bicycling and Trail Walks
Taking your bikes along RV Camping is always a good pastime. It really gets you out and about. If you are going to the campgrounds, there are usually roads leading in and out that have slow speed limits, so you can ride through the park pretty enjoyable.
A lot of these parks will have trail walks that you can go on. We have taken Aiden in his wheelchair on a couple of these.
#8 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Stargazing
Stargazing is a very relaxing and enjoyable hobby to have. We really enjoy stargazing while RV Camping and from home. We are beginners with using a telescope as we started off using an easy-to-use free App called SkyView (the Lite Version) that helps you to identify the stars you can see without using any special equipment. It’s really a good App for identifying the Solar System, Stars, Constellations, the brightest Satellites such as the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Galaxies such as the Milky Way. It has relaxing music that plays in the background while you are searching for your favorites in the sky!
Now since our son, Aiden, has shown interest in Astronomy, we decided to purchase a special telescope that allows him to view on a laptop what we can see through the telescope. It has really been a fun, new educational activity for our whole family and we strongly suggest checking into stargazing as it can be a fun and free activity for the entire family!
#9 of the Top 10 RV Camping Hobbies and Entertainment to Explore: Outdoor Games
What better way to spend time with family and friends than to play games! While camping, weather permitting, Outdoor RV Camping Games is what we enjoy the most! We have a list on our website of the Top 7 Outdoor RV Camping Games that can be played pretty such anywhere!
