How To Safely Leave Your Pet in an RV Alone
(For A Short Time)
We see these questions asked all the time on Social Media…
“How do we keep our pets safe while RV Camping”?
“Is it safe to leave our pets in an RV alone”?
“What if the power goes out while we are away”?
I have said in the past, I’m a “worrier”. I worry about leaving our dogs alone even at home. Leaving them alone in the RV is additional stress for me. However, there are times when we have to run errands or just have to be away from the RV for a bit and there are locations where dogs are just not allowed.
We came up with a solution for us (and we will share with you) How to Safely Leave Your Pet Alone in an RV for a short time.
We have a few puppies so they must be crated while we are away, or we wouldn’t have an RV left when we returned! LOL
Safe Solutions
There are safe solutions if you must leave your pet alone in an RV. We will begin with a simple solution. If you happen to be camping with family members or friends, have them check in on your pets while you are away from you RV. However, this is usually not the case.
Here are some additional solutions for Safe RV Camping with Pets:
#1: Dog Monitor App used with Temperature Gauge with a Dog Crate
(This is Our Personal Setup for Safety for our dogs in our RV while we are away)
Cost: $4.99
What we use:
The Dog Monitor App, a Dog Crate, and a Small Temperature Gauge.
The difference between leaving our pets alone at home vs leaving them alone in the RV is that we typically don’t have Wi-Fi available where we camp. We must depend on cellular services to relay information regarding monitoring our pets.
We have unlimited cellular data through Sprint on our iPad as well as our iPhones. So, for us, it doesn’t require any additional cost to use this system.
We simply put the puppies in the crate, then we put a small temperature gauge on top of the crate, and finally we use the Dog Monitor App to monitor them as well as the temperature in the RV! Additionally, you can access The Dog Monitor online HERE. It works great for us!
For an App one-time fee of $4.99, you can’t beat that!
Here is what you get with the Dog Monitor App:
With this App you get Live HD Video, Unlimited reach with cellular data, Wi-Fi, and/or internet, data log, multi-person support, and the ability to communicate with your pet through the App. You receive notifications for every sound made and it’s up to you what notifications you receive and how often.
If your dog is barking a lot at the campground while you’re away, you would normally have no idea, but I assure you, your neighbors know! Now you can be notified if your dog is being noisy and you can communicate with your pet with this App and calm them while you’re away!
This App is also good for anyone with a pet that has any medical issues including separation anxiety.
The Dog Monitor App is a multi-platform App so you can use it on your watch, TV or any other smart device with IOS from Apple or Android. This setup does require you to have 2 separate devices (one for the Pet Owner and one for the Pet).
The makers of the Dog Monitor App suggest a few ways to connect the devices:
Use the WiFi network at the hotel or a place where you stay, including RV Campgrounds that have WiFi Access.
Buy a local sim card with cellular internet.
Use Internet roaming – the costs are then according to the prices of your mobile operator per MB.
According to the Dog Monitor App Website, “the application is developed with a focus on a low data consumption. One hour of sound monitoring requires less than 2 MB of data – this is less than what you need for sending one larger photo by email”.
#2: SensorPush Wireless Thermometer/Hygrometer WITH the SensorPush Gateway Total Cost of System $149.94
SensorPush is able to constantly monitor the conditions in your RV regarding temperature and humidity levels, even while you’re away with the addition of their new SensorPush G1 WiFi Gateway. This allows for constant access and alerts from anywhere, via the Internet.
The SensorPush G1 WiFi Gateway allows for constant monitoring of conditions with the SensorPush Smart Sensors.
It can be used anywhere in the world! You simply connect the gateway via WiFi or Ethernet. Then all your SensorPush devices will be available from anywhere, via the Internet. You can purchase multiple sensors for monitoring, and you will receive real-time updates, full data history and alerts, and it’s all available at work, on vacation, or from anywhere you are RV-ing! Multiple family members or friends (whomever you allow) can log into the same account and receive updated data and alerts.
#3: RV PetSafety Pet Environment Temperature Monitor Cost $198.00
The RV PetSafety Pet Environment Temperature Monitor works with 3G cellular networks and doesn’t require WiFi. You get temperature alerts to your smartphone from the peel-and-stick monitors you put in your RV. These alerts can be sent to up to 5 emails/cell phones. It also includes a built-in rechargeable battery that comes in handy if the power goes out at your campsite! Additionally, there is a built-in GPS to track your RV’s location.
