As Americans, we love to show our patriotism and support for our favorite sports teams, causes, or holidays by flying flags on our RVs.

You may see flags displayed on a pole at the front, back, or side of an RV or on a free-rotating PVC pole in the ground. But did you know there are proper guidelines to follow when displaying a flag on an RV or home? Out of respect for the American Soldiers and Veterans, it is best if you follow the guidelines when displaying flags on your RV. Additionally, favorite sports teams in general tend to be a popular theme for flying related flags including for a sports championship. Sometimes you just want to fly certain flags for décor or for fun. Finally, there are times when a specific flag is flown to show support for a specific cause or related event. These moments create a sense of unity and pride, making your travels even more memorable.

Steps for Choosing the Right Flag for Your RV

Selecting the perfect flag for your RV involves considering several factors.

First, think about the material of the flag; durable fabrics like nylon or polyester are ideal for outdoor use.

Next, consider the size of the flag relative to your RV to ensure it is proportionate.

Additionally, think about the message or symbolism you want to convey, whether it’s patriotism, support for a cause, or personal expression.

Furthermore, consider the size of the flag you wish to display. The typical size of a United States of America Flag on a home or RV is 3’ x 5’. The standard American flag dimensions should be between ¼   to 1/3 of the height of the flagpole. So, for example, you would need a 3’ x 5’ sized flag for a 20’ flagpole (based on ¼ of height).

Lastly, ensure the flag is weather-resistant to withstand various elements during your travels

As I mentioned before, there are many different types of flags available, such as the United States of America flag, sports team flags, and flags supporting causes or other holidays. It is important for everyone to choose flags that are appropriate and meaningful to them and thanks to the freedom of speech we have, we are all permitted to do so!

Flag Positioning

Ensure your flag is placed in a prominent and respectful position on your RV. When positioning the flag, make sure it is visible and not obstructed by other objects. Avoid placing it in areas where it could be easily soiled or damaged.

The American flag should always be the highest if multiple flags are displayed. Use a sturdy flagpole or mount to secure the flag, ensuring it does not become loose or fall.

If you are traveling, secure the flag to prevent it from flapping excessively, which can cause damage. By following these steps, you can proudly display your flags while respecting the traditions and guidelines associated with them.

Flag Maintenance

Regularly check your flag for signs of wear and tear, and clean it as needed to maintain its appearance. A tattered or dirty flag should be replaced to maintain the dignity of the display. If your United States of America flag cannot be restored to its original appearance, it may be time to retire the flag. When a US flag gets worn out in appearance, there is proper protocol for disposal. Please click HERE for more information on proper disposal.

Understanding Flag Etiquette

The significance of following flag etiquette, especially when displaying the American flag, is nothing to be overlooked. You must consider proper flag position, such as flying the American flag higher than any other flags on the RV.

You must use some type of light, such as a spotlight, at night that shines upon the USA flag and keeps it illuminated when dark. You must also bring the flag indoors in inclement weather

Personal Reflection of Displayed Flag at Campground

On one of our trips to our favorite campground, I saw a younger man who had been camping across from us for a few weeks proudly hang his new US Flag on a very tall flagpole at the back of his camper. I felt appreciation when he raised that flag and commented to my dad, a Veteran, that it is a nice flag and flagpole. However, what happened next caused me to pause from confusion, and then, honestly, a feeling of pure disgust.

This same young man then went over to his wife and was helping her open a package of something. They spread this out and I realized it was another flag, but I couldn’t quite tell what it was at first. That was until he went to the back of his camper and proudly raised the second flag just underneath the American Flag. My mouth dropped in awe. This flag resembled the American Flag with Stars and Stripes, but it was black and white and looked to have a tattered appearance to some of the stripes.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SHOW RESPECT TO OUR MILITARY AND VETERANS WHILE RV CAMPING SOWLE RV

Now I understand free speech and I agree everyone has the right to their own beliefs, feelings, and supports. This is not about that at all. This is about my personal feelings of disrespect I felt looking at that black and white flag.

I personally felt such a strong sense of disrespect towards the United States of America, our current military, and our veterans. I was embarrassed that my veteran Dad had to be RV camping across from this display.

My Dad had displayed all of his flags on the front of his 5th wheel showing support for The United States of America, the infantry he was a part of in the Vietnam War, the state of Kansas, his favorite basketball team – The University of Kansas Jayhawks (Rock Chalk!), and a Veterans flag to complete his hard worked display of showing respect to military while tastefully showing support for his favorite athletic team.

I searched for the meaning behind this black and white flag and found many misconceptions about what it stands for. I read things like economic downfall, a horrible crisis in the USA, and even read things about it showing lack of respect to our President. For the most part, what I read is that it is a display of being unhappy with the USA in some way.

Like I said before, I understand and support the freedom of speech and the right to support whatever anyone wants to support (within reason of course) but I just can’t help but wonder if there isn’t a better way to voice opposition without disrespecting others at the same time. Just my thoughts…

Flag Displayed at Campgrounds

Overall, flags being displayed at campgrounds are usually a beautiful way to show support for our country. Additionally, it’s a fun way to show support for your state, favorite team, or just about anything fun you can think of. Just be sure to think about it before you hang your next flag of support. Consider other people’s feelings. If you feel it is appropriate, then that is your right in the United States of America.

Just remember those who fought and continue to fight to give you that right…
