Join Us for the Great Backyard Bird Count GBBC
Are you looking for a fun activity while RV Camping or from home? Needing something to entertain the kids during a 3-day weekend in February? We have a great idea for you! The Great Backyard Bird Count GBBC takes place annually in February. Why not participate in this fun activity for all ages with the Great Backyard Bird Count!
What is The Great Backyard Bird Count?
The Great Backyard Bird Count GBBC is an annual bird counting event where bird watchers (beginners and advanced) of any age observe the birds around them. You don’t have to have any experience because GBBC, along with the eBird App, provides you with all the information you need to participate!
Who Can Participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count?
Absolutely anyone of any age can participate in The Great Backyard Bird Count!
Why Do We Need to Count Birds?
We collect data on wild birds in our community and that information is given to Scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. The data is then used to get a bigger picture of what is happening to our bird population to answer many questions.
For instance, how is the weather in any given area influencing the bird population there? Where are each specific species of birds located at any given time? How are bird diseases affecting the birds and what areas are more prone to these infections? What time of year is migration happening with these birds compared to years past?
Those questions and many others are being answered by the help from GBBC and the FeederWatch Annual Programs.
What Are the Benefits of Participating?
During the count, you not only can observe what birds you are seeing in your area but also what others in your area are seeing by using the eBird App! You can also add photos of the birds you see. Additionally, you can check out the photos that others are posting! This is a global event, so photos will be shared all over the world!
When does the Great Backyard Bird Count Begin and End?
The Great Backyard Bird Count event begins on a Friday and ends on the following Monday each year in February, making it a 3-day weekend event! For updated annual dates for all Bird Watching/Bird Counting Activities, see SOWLE RV’s BIRD AWARENESS DAYS article!
