Geocaching While RV Camping
Geocaching While RV Camping is a great hobby to have! It is a great way for families to participate in a fun activity together no matter the age range!
What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is a recreational activity that is done outdoors. Participants use a GPS or a mobile device to perform a worldwide hide and seek type game. It is very similar to a Treasure Hunt but is a high-tech game now. It is becoming very popular among RV Campers for entertainment while traveling and enjoying the great outdoors! It’s a great way for everyone to experience unique places they may never have traveled to before. There are some state parks who have joined in on the fun and have created their own Geocaching Activities within the State Campgrounds. RV Camping Geocaching is a fun new trend that is catching on fast!
How does Geocaching work?
Participants create geocaches (a waterproof container) that contain a specific object, a pen or pencil, and a Logbook. Then they decide on a location to hide it in and mark it by coordinates. This is done all over the world for others to try locating. The player who finds the geocache signs and dates the logbook, proving they have found it. It is then placed back where it was found. Many times, items such as toys, trinkets, or other items are traded within this system and then the game continues with the new object. Information on approximate location, item left, and logbook are stored online on different websites and apps.
What kind of items are left at Cache Sites?
Contents that are hidden at Geocaches are free for the taking but must be replaced with a different item usually of higher value or personal meaning.
Here are some examples of items that are common to be left at Geocache sites.
Containers
Coins
Small Toys
Small Compass
Ornaments
Buttons
Books
Disposable Cameras

What are Hitchhikers in the Geocache World?
Hitchhikers are objects that are found in one specific location and then moved like a “hitchhiker” to a different location. These locations are then recorded in the logbook and on the website or app so others can find them in their new location. This is a great activity for RV Campers who travel as they can take these items to many locations during their travels!
What’s not allowed to be left in caches?
As you would assume, there must be rules in Geocaching to provide safety for the seekers. There are a few things that are not allowed to be left in Geocaches. These items include food, drugs, illegal items, and weapons to name a few.
9 Types of Geocaching
There are many types of Geocaches found all over the world. Here are a few types:
- BIT Cache – a laminated card with a QR code, URL and password for logging and are listed only on opencaching.us
- Virtual Cache-gathering information at the cache site instead of finding a hidden container.
- Earthcache-a special geological location people can visit to learn more about a unique feature about the earth. This is led by the Geological Society of America.
- Locationless Cache-instead of finding a hidden container you are given the task to locate an object.
- Webcam Caches-using public webcams to mark your location by taking a screenshot of that specific webcam.
- USB Dead Drop Cache-a USB drive attached to a wall, building or curb but must be accessible to everyone in the given location. It will contain a readme.txt file to explain the adventure.
- Night Cache-can only be completed at night and contains reflective or other types of night visible hints to help the Geocacher find the cache.
- Traveling Cache-taking a found cache and you take it with you to a different location (AKA Hitchhiker).
- Mystery Cache-this Geocache will contain a puzzle or something similar, to solve prior to being given the coordinates of the actual cache.
