12 Chihuahua Facts You Need to Know Before Taking them RV Camping
We love RV Camping and w love taking our SOWLE RV Chihuahua 6-Pack with us RV Camping every single time. However, we have learned t about Chihuahuas and know the likes and dislikes of ours very well. Knowing as much information as you can about Chihuahuas and yours specifically can only help to keep them safer when away from home in a different setting. That is why we wanted to give you some facts about Chihuahuas. These are 12 Chihuahua Facts You Need to Know Before Taking them RV Camping.
1. World’s Smallest Breed of Dog
Weight
The typical weight of a Chihuahua is 4-6lbs full grown. Both American and British standards say a Chihuahua can’t weigh more than 6lbs for conformation according to different Breed Clubs and Shows. Chihuahua pets (not show dogs) typically have a higher weight range sometimes even above 10 lbs. with larger bone structure. They can still be purebred in this state, they just don’t meet the qualifications and requirements to enter a conformation show.
Height
The Chihuahuas typical height is 5-8” and some can be as large as 12-15”.
2. The Chihuahua Name
The Chihuahua is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. There are many names given to Chihuahua Pets, the most common name for the Chihuahua is “Chico”.
3. AKC Registration
The American Kennel Club is a registry of purebred dogs in the United States and a trusted expert in information for dogs. The AKC officially registered the Chihuahua in 1904 in the “Toy Group”.
4. Lifespan
Chihuahuas have a very long lifespan of 12-20 years!
5. “EXCUSE ME WHILE I MAKE MY APPEARANCE”
Litters
The average Chihuahua liter size is 2-5 pups, but smaller Chihuahuas tend to have 1-3. Chihuahuas typically have large round eyes, ears that stand straight up after time, and a rounded skull. However, Chihuahuas in the same litter can be drastically different in size and mature very differently.
6. The Chihuahua Noggin
Chihuahua pups are born with a “soft-spot” just like human babies. In a Chihuahua, it is called a molera and some Chihuahuas have it their entire life. The Chihuahua has the largest brain to body ratio of any breed of dog. They are born with either of the two shapes of a head:
Apple Head, a round head with close-set eyes and shorter ears (typically shorter legs as well)
or
Deer Head, a flat-topped head with wider-set eyes and larger ears (typically longer, slender legs as well)
7. Coat Textures
The Chihuahua can have either a long haired-long coat or a short haired-smooth coat. Although a short haired-smooth coat doesn’t exactly mean they’re soft and smooth coated. They can have a velvet-like feel to a whiskery feel and others can have more of a downy feel and even feel a little fluffy. Their coats are usually very easy to keep clean.
8. Extreme Loyalty
Chihuahuas are known to be a very loyal breed. They usually connect with one specific person and tend to become very protective of that person.
9. A Colorful Bunch
The Chihuahua is a colorful bunch! They have the largest color combination of any breed of dog and can range from solid or mixed, from marked, splashed spotted or any kind of pattern! The American Kennel Club recognizes 30 colors and 11 markings including 9 Standard Colors and 6 Standard Markings.
There are 9 standard colors: |

Black and Tan |
Blue and Tan |
Chocolate |

Cream |
Fawn |

Red |
There are 6 standard markings: |

10. Mating
Interesting enough, the mating between a long-haired and short-haired chihuahua is not eligible for AKC registration.
11. Coat Texture vs. Head Shape
Either coat texture (long-haired or short-haired) of a Chihuahua can have either shape of head (deer or apple).
12. Merle Coat
A Merle Coat (a gene modifier which changes the pigmentation of the base color causing lighter spots) Chihuahua is not considered part of the breed by the Kennel Club as of 2007 (but this is for all Merle Dogs, not just Chihuahuas).
