The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Perfect TV for Your RV
Whether you just bought an RV and are needing to purchase an additional TV for the bedroom or purchased a used RV that didn’t include a TV, deciding between the numerous brands, styles, and options that are included (or not included) can be challenging. We have created The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Perfect TV for Your RV!
What To Do BEFORE You Begin the Process of Purchasing a TV or TV Mount for Your RV
Before heading out to the store to purchase your new TV, there are a few things you should consider. We have broken this all into sections for you to easily check these things off your list. First, you need to consider the LOCATION that you need for a new TV.
Next, consider the AREA in which you will be placing the TV. Thirdly, consider the type of TV SERVICE you will be using. Additionally, you need to consider what OPTIONS you would like and what your family would like.
Finally, it’s time to SELECT A TV and a MOUNT for the TV if it’s needed. We will share WHAT WE CHOSE and how much we love what we purchased for our RV’s AND Home!
Where Do You Need TVs in Your RV?
Like we asked earlier, do you need a TV for the bedroom in your new RV? Many RVs come with the main living room TV only, and many people enjoy having a TV in the bedroom as well.
Do you have a Bunk Room that the kids will be using? Will they need a TV and also consider if they will be using any game consoles.
How about outdoors? Did your RV come with an entertainment area for using a TV outdoors and not the TV? Ours did.
Finally, are you someone who watches TV in the kitchen? Most RV’s have a kitchen ride beside the living room, however, if you have an exceptionally large RV or if you have a floorplan that has the kitchen at one end and the living room at the other, considering a TV for the kitchen area may be a great idea for you!
What is the Size of the Area Where TVs are Going
The next thing to consider is what size the area is where you will be putting the TV. Will you be adding it to a surface (countertop or table) or do you plan to mount it on a wall?
When I went to purchase a TV for our Motorhome, which we bought a year ago, I wanted it to be a gift for Mark’s Birthday. I thought there would be plenty of room in the upper bunk area of the motorhome for a 32” TV. However, I was extremely thankful that I went ahead and measured the area because it would only fit a 28” TV.
I was so glad I did not have to mess with a return to Amazon on that one just because I took a few seconds to go measure the area!
So, just be sure to measure the area where you will be putting the TV!
What Type of TV Service Will You Be Using?
There are SO MANY TV Service Options out there now! It is no wonder that is one of the top categories with RV Camping! We are going to cover 4 options you have for TV Service but we will keep it short I promise.
If you follow SOWLE RV, you know OUR choice on How to Watch TV While RV Camping WITHOUT Using Your Hotspot!
If you have any trouble setting it up, please check out How to Setup a Device for Streaming TV While RV Camping!
OK, so now let’s get to those 4 Options!
Option #1: Digital Antenna – this is the cheapest and only FREE option out there but it’s not a bad option by any means if you don’t watch much TV while RV Camping. It’s also a great option if you just want to have TV available for the news and weather while RV Camping.
Option #2: Cable Service – this option is typically available in RV Resorts and/or RV Membership locations such as some KOA’s. This is not usually an option for State Parks or Campgrounds.
Option #3: Satellite Service – this option is one that is used by many RVer’s, us included. There are a few providers to choose from and most work all over the United States.
Option #4: Streaming Service – this option is also one that is used by many RVer’s and also is included in what we use.
If you are interested in using Satellite and/or Streaming Services, we encourage you to read much more about it HERE where we share some awesome tips!!
What Options Do You Want in the Perfect TV for Your RV
Next, you should consider the options you want (or need) for your RV TV.
Do you need a Smart TV for Streaming? (most are Smart TV’s nowadays).
What resolution do you want?
Do you prefer LCD, LED, or Plasma?
Before you purchase a TV for your RV, make sure you review the warranty information.
Selecting the Perfect TV for Your RV
Finally, it is time to select a TV! There are SO MANY TV Brands it can be hard to determine the best brand. Do you go with the same brand you have always used at home? Do you go with the brand that is most well-known? Or, do you go with a totally different, new brand?
I can tell you we had always been a VIZIO TV Purchasing Family! We still have a VIZIO TV in our Living Room at home right now. However, we did make the decision a few years ago to try a different brand for a second TV we have in our living room for our son (I’ll explain that another time) but we couldn’t be happier with that change!
Selecting a TV Mount for your Perfect TV for Your RV
Selecting a TV mount is the easier of all this TV business. If you know the size of your TV, the only other thing you need to decide is if you want articulating arms or just tilting ability. Also, double check that the mount lists your brand of TV although most are pretty universal now.
*One especially important point I want to stress is for you to look up in your RV Owner’s Manual how to mount a TV on your specific RV walls if you’re not sure how to do that correctly and safely! Just make sure it is mounted into an RV Manufactured designed stud on the wall! If you purchased a new RV, it would normally contain a sticker on the wall stating where the stud is.
What We Chose for Our RV TV’s and at Home and Why
What We Chose
We chose the TCL Brand TV’s! We have 2 RV’s, so we will share all the details! Here’s what we purchased!
Travel Trailer
Living Room – TCL 55“
Bedroom – TCL 32”
Outdoor Entertainment Area – TCL 32”
Motorhome
Living Room – TCL 28” – Unfortunately they no longer have this size available on Amazon.
At Home
Bedroom – TCL 32″
Guest Bedroom – TCL 32″
Aiden’s TV Setup in the living room – Since Aiden has some special vision requirements, whenever he wants to relax and watch TV, we use this awesome setup!
It includes a Floor Stand on rollers and a tray to hold DVR/Satellite Box/Other stuff for him so he can watch his own TV and be able to see it well) and the TCL 32″ TV fits on it perfectly!
Most of the TCL TV’s range in size from 32″ to 75″.
Why We Chose Them
Absolutely, hands down, the most cost-effective TV on the market right now with so many options!
What We Chose for Our RV TV Mount and Why
What We Chose
We chose the Mount-It! RV TV Mount!
Why We Chose It
We really like that this mount comes with 2 Wall Plates. This allows you to mount them in two different locations and transfer the TV back and forth between those locations.
For example, you could install one wall plate in the bedroom and install the other wall plate on the Exterior Entertainment Area of your RV and use only one TV and transfer them back and forth where you need them at any given time.
Additionally, we like that you can easily take the TV down if you have any concerns about traveling with a mounted TV.
